The Damascus Collection of Manuscripts is of remarkable importance in terms of its value within the Syriac Orthodox tradition. Spanning nearly a millennium and a half, from a sixth-century New Testament manuscript to more recent additions, this catalogue introduces 60 manuscripts from the collection that were selected by a group of distinguished researchers under the direction of Sebastian P. Brock three decades ago.
The catalogue includes full descriptions of the contents of each of the manuscripts, the translations of the colophons and of numerous notes found in the margins and others places, as well as codicological descriptions. It is richly illustrated with images of the bindings, parts of the text and areas of particular interest. Its title, Echoes of Ink and Faith, mirrors the core contents of the manuscripts themselves and the academic way in which they are described.
The catalogue was compiled by Roger Akhrass (Department of Syriac Studies, Atchaneh), Ephrem Aboud Ishac (presently Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna), and Erich Renhart (VESTIGIA – Manuscript Research Centre, University of Graz).
